Rembrandtplein is one of Amsterdam's most vibrant and historic squares. Named after the world-famous Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn, the square has a rich history and plays a central role in the vibrant city life.
The square originated in the 17th century when it was designated in 1669 as the location for the Monday market where dairy products were traded. This designation gave the square the name Botermarkt. In 1852, a large statue of Rembrandt van Rijn was placed in the centre of the square. This statue was unveiled by King Willem III and has been an iconic part of the square ever since. The statue depicting Rembrandt in his classical pose is one of the oldest statues in Amsterdam. In the 19th century, the name of the Botermarkt was officially changed to Rembrandtplein by the city council. This was in honor of the famous painter who lived in nearby Jodenbreestraat from 1639 to 1658. This is now home to the Rembrandt House.
Rembrandt Square has always had an important cultural function. On the square was the Rembrandt Theatre, which was designed in 1902. From 1919, the theatre was mainly used as a cinema. Unfortunately, the building was hit by a fire in 1943, presumably caused by a resistance group during World War II. After the war, the building became a small theatre after which it was converted into the Caransa Hotel in the 1970s.
Today, Rembrandtplein is a vibrant location full of restaurants, cafés, nightclubs and hotels. It attracts tourists and Amsterdammers alike who want to enjoy the unique atmosphere of this historic square. Rembrandt's statue remains one of the square's main attractions. Near the statue is a replica of Rembrandt's painting The Night Watch, depicted in life-size bronze figures. This artwork offers visitors a unique opportunity to literally walk through the Night Watch.
In addition, the square is known for its cosy terraces where you can enjoy a drink or meal all year round. Especially in summer, the square is packed with people enjoying the Amsterdam atmosphere. In addition, Rembrandtplein is one of the hotspots for nightlife in Amsterdam. With popular clubs and bars such as Air, Escape and Club Prime, the square is a great location for those who want to spend the evening in style.
Rembrandt Square combines a rich history with a vibrant modern culture. Whether you are interested in art, history, shopping or going out, the square offers a unique mix of activities and attractions.
